Sun Safety

Should I avoid the sun?

Below are three articles on sun safety written by Dr. Hyman, Dr. Mercola and Dr. Axe. According to all three of these natural doctors, sun exposure helps our bodies produce Vitamin D which is very important for our health. All three doctors also agree that over exposure to the sun that produces a sunburn is unhealthy.

According to Dr. Axe, “Sun-protective measures like hats, sunglasses, seeking shade and avoiding peak sunlight for extended periods of time should be used before turning to sunscreen.” According to Dr. Mercola, “You can boost your internal ability to offset UVA and UVB radiation through the nutrients you eat each day. Antioxidants found in colorful fruits and veggies have been shown to have protective effects, but the real "superstar" is the fat-soluble carotenoid astaxanthin.” In addition Dr. Hyman reminds us that it is very important to “stay hydrated.”

What sunscreen should I purchase?

All three of the articles below suggest buying a sunscreen that has been tested and approved by EWG (Environmental Working Group). These sunscreens avoid dangerous chemicals that are added to many sunscreens. One of the sunscreens highly rated by EWG is Goddess Garden Organics and is sold at Alliance Integrative Medicine for $15 (facial, 3.4oz).
